Meet the Maker: PICHULIK

Some materials carry memory. In the hands of PICHULIK, rope becomes line, volume and talisman.

The story began at Katherine-Mary Pichulik’s kitchen table in Cape Town. Working with an everyday material often overlooked by traditional jewellery design, she discovered a medium with an unexpected sculptural presence. That early experiment became the foundation of a distinctive design language.

Rooted in Africa and inspired by mythology, ritual and ancient traditions, PICHULIK approaches every collection as a chapter in a larger story. Its pieces explore themes of feminine courage, transformation and self-belief.

They are designed not simply as decoration, but as meaningful objects that connect the wearer to a narrative.

Locally produced and repurposed rope remains at the heart of the work. It is braided, wrapped and knotted, then combined with cast brass, natural stones, waxed cotton and found materials. Strong silhouettes, elemental colour and tactile contrasts give each piece its recognisable character.

Every design is made by one artisan from beginning to end in the Cape Town atelier. This close relationship between idea, material and maker is central to PICHULIK’s philosophy. Sustainability follows the same thinking through the reuse of offcuts, investment in craft skills and collaboration with local women-owned businesses.

At OOSA, PICHULIK occupies the space between adornment and object: intimate in scale, sculptural in form and rich in meaning.
